Actionable Advice
- “I relished being the worst.” Putting yourself in situations where you’re the least knowledgeable is by far the quickest way to gain musical knowledge.
- “How’s the gig, how’s the hang, and how’s the music? If two of those things are good I say take the gig. If all three are good that’s the gig you keep for forever.” We need some strategy to determine what gigs are we want to devote our time and attention to. Often we’re busy looking for a “better” gig, but can it really get any better than playing fulfilling music with your best friends for a fair rate?
- “It’s not about you, it’s not about me, it’s not about any one musician. It’s about the song. Did that song come off they way it was supposed to?” Serve the music, not your ego.
- “You say just as much, or more, with your instrument than your words.” Don’t show up to a jam and immediately try to name drop or impress everyone. Instead try to make new friends, and make everyone else you’re playing with sound as good as possible.
